Guy’s Day

July 2, 2010

SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB --- Canada Day was celebrated at Spruce Meadows with the opening day of the “Canada One” Tournament. There were 33 entries in the 1.50m Cargill Cup. It was the New Zealand National Anthem that was played at the end of the competition, as Guy Thomas won his first FEI competition at Spruce Meadows.

The course was designed by American, Anthony D’Ambrosio. The time was tight, at 74 seconds, over a course that spanned 490 metres, with 16 jumping efforts. Only two joined Thomas in the jump-off, Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa, and Will Simpson of the United States.

It was elite company for Thomas, Olympic and World Cup champions are never easy to beat. Pessoa was the first to go, clearing the course and setting a time to beat at 41.66 seconds. “I thought I had a shot, maybe I could beat Rodrigo this year after he beat me last year,” commented Thomas.

The odds of victory for improved for Thomas as he watched Simpson pull a rail, taking himself out of the running. Knowing what he had to do, Thomas set off into the ring with his 10 year-old Holstein stallion, Peterbilt.

With the quicker intermediate time all Thomas had to do was hold on. Pressing across the finish line the pair came home in a time of 40.26 seconds, edging out Pessoa for the win. “It’s pretty awesome,” said Thomas after his win in the Cargill Cup.
