Chase Boggio and Rockford Capture the Large Junior Hunter 16-17 Championship at the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival

January 23, 2010

Wellington, FL --- Championships were awarded today in some of the Junior Hunter and Amateur-Owner divisions at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center during the second week of the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival.

Junior hunters were showcased today in the Rost Arena, where Chase Boggio and Norgan Inc.'s Rockford picked up the tricolor in the Large Junior Hunter 16-17 division. Boggio and Rockford won the handy hunter class yesterday, and they placed first and second over fences today for a grand total of 26 points to claim the championship. The reserve champion ribbon went to Kelsey Thatcher and Pony Lane Farm's Gianni.

Rockford is a new ride for Boggio, who has only shown the bay gelding once prior to this weekend. Rockford also shows in the Second Year Green Hunters with Nora Thomas. Boggio is thankful for the ride on Rockford whom he says is "never fresh, doesn't really look at the jumps at all, and is very easy to ride. You can just get on and go."

The pair won the handy round yesterday, which Boggio says is Rockford's forte. "He was meant to be an equitation horse when they first got him, so he's really good at the handy rounds," Boggio acknowledged.

Sixteen-year-old Boggio is originally from Atlanta, GA, but has been commuting back and forth from Wellington to Ocala, where he rides with Bob Braswell and Christina Schlusemeyer. Boggio is currently a junior in high school, and he plans to continue showing throughout the spring at the Aiken, Atlanta, and Devon horse shows.

Boggio hopes to continue his success in the coming weeks, noting, "I would like to improve on some of the things that I might be a little rusty at. Just learning to ride all the different horses is a really good experience."

Amateur-Owner Hunters 36 & Over wrapped up their second week of competition today as well, and Lynn Walsh rode her own Mac Arthur Park to the championship. Other winners today included Tuscan Sun, owned by Peter Pletcher and ridden by Kelsie Brittan to the win in the first class of the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under. The blue in the second class of the Small Junior Hunter 15 & Under went to Scott Stewart's Caligo, ridden by Victoria Colvin.

The second week of the 12-week FTI Winter Equestrian Festival concludes tomorrow when the remaining Junior, Amateur, and Pony hunter championships will be awarded.
