Buirs wins $20,000 Timberframe Grand Prix

Total Touch delivers only double clear of the class to claim top spot

June 29, 2009

Langley, BC --- The West Coast Classic Tournament culminated on Sunday with the $20,000 Timberframe Grand Prix. In a field of sixteen entries, only four advanced to the jump off, with Langley’s own Samantha Buirs delivering the only double clear on her mount, Total Touch.

A regular at Thunderbird Show Park, Buirs took the top spot in last year’s Grand Prix at this same tournament, so she was one to watch in a field that included Richmond’s Gary Brewster, Burnaby’s Gary Lowe and Laura Jane Tidball from Thunderbird Show Stables.

The class got off to a strong start with both Suzanne Brewster on Watermark and Katie Waring on O’Lilly posting clear rounds under the time allowed. Gary Brewster was unable to go clear on Countown, followed by Chris Lowe on Vichy and LJ on her first two mounts Caruso and Enzo. Buirs was the next to go clear, followed by LJ on Oxford.

Suzanne Brewster and Watermark were the first into the ring for the jump off. Although the round was strong, a refusal at fence two cost them. O’Lilly and Katie Waring had a rail mid round, delivering a time of 40.73. Buirs and Touch were third into the ring, going clear and galloping to the final fence to move into first with a time of 39.81. Laura Jane Tidball and Oxford were almost able to snatch the win with a time of 38.44, but clipped a rail on the final fence, drawing an audible reaction form the assembled spectators.
