Canadian Eventer Karl Slezak Earns Second in both CCI 1* and 2* divisions at Florida Three Day Event

Ottawa, ON --- Canadian eventers were competitive in both east and west coast competitions over the April 17th–20th weekend. On the west coast, Karl Slezak, finished in second place in the CCI 2* and 1* divisions at CCI 2* Florida Three Day Event, at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala FL, while Suzy Elliott finished in 10th place in the CIC 1* division at Twin Rivers Three Day Event and Horse Trials in Templeton, CA.

Slezak, a native Tottenham, ON, and Braveheart, an 11-year-old Canadian thoroughbred gelding owned by Patricia Fitzgerald, were in seventh place following dressage with a score of 53.4 penalties. Posting a perfectly clean cross country ride and adding four penalties in show jumping, Slezak finished on a final score of 57.4.

“It was a perfect course for Braveheart and he was the best he could be,” remarked Slezak. “The course was really well done. The changes that were made rode great.”

Micheline Jordan, who now resides in Ocala, FL, and her own Irish Diamonds, a 10-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred gelding, were tied for 25th place after dressage. The pair added 6.4 time penalties on cross-country to move up to 12th spot, and added eight jumping and two time penalties in show jumping to finish in 10th place with a score of 77.3.

Riding her own Minstral, a 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Kelly List of Bracebridge, ON, finished in 13th spot with a score of 84. In 19th place was Rebecca Lee of Bon Accord, AB, and Gold Twist, an eight-year-old Oldenburg gelding, with a score of 96.1. Just behind Lee in 21st place, was Vanessa Fenwick of Pefferlaw, ON, and her seven-year-old Dutch Warmblood Arabian cross gelding, Erodium, who finished on a score of 99.8.

The top score of the day in the CCI 2* division went to Jennie Brannigan of the United States riding Cooper, with a score of 47.1.

In the CCI 1* division, Slezak and Pavarotti, a six-year-old Westfalian gelding owned by Slezak and Don J. Good, were tied for second place following dressage with a score of 45.4 penalties. Posting only 0.8 time penalties over the cross-country course and producing a fault-free ride in show jumping, Slezak finished on a final score of 46.2 and the second place ribbon.

“Pavarotti is an amazing horse, and I am trying to develop him for the future,” noted Slezak. “I would like to thank the owners of my horses for all their support.”

Close behind Slezak was Moira (Momo) Laframboise of Rosemont, ON, and Roksolana, an eight-year-old Trakehner mare owned by Steve Chepa. The pair finished in fourth place on their dressage score of 50.7 after they produced fault-free cross-country and show jumping rounds.

Rebecca Howard, of Salmon Arm, BC, and currently residing in North Carolina, and Riddle Master, a seven-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding owned by Caroline Bazley, finished in 14th place with a score of 59.4. Close behind Howard was Canadian Olympian, Mike Winter, originally of Toronto, ON, and now residing in Newnan, GA. Winter finished in 16th place riding Unsteelable, an eight-year-old Thoroughbred gelding owned by Jim Walker. In 19th spot was Melissa Moore of Salmon Arm, BC, and Noble Dunlavin, her seven-year-old Thoroughbred gelding. Laframboise, riding her second horse Irish Kate, an eight-year-old Thoroughbred mare, finished in 22nd place.

The CCI 1* division was won by Olympic Gold Medalist from Great Brittan Leslie Law and All The Buzz on a score of 45.4.

At Twin Rivers, in the CIC 1* International Horse Trials division Elliott originally of Westbank, BC, and now residing in Yelm, WA, finished in 10th riding Chauncy, a six-year-old Thoroughbred gelding owned by Jonathan Elliott. After dressage, the pair had a score of 64.6, and they added only 10.8 time penalties from the cross-country course and five time penalties from the show jumping course to finish with a total score of 80.4.

Elliott, with her second horse, Ogopogo, a nine-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, finished in 12th place with a score of 85.1. Canadian Olympian Hawley Bennett, of Langley, BC, finished 13th spot riding Canadian Spy, Susan G. Church’s seven-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, with a score of 90.3.

American Frankie Thieriot won CCI 1* division riding Fric Frac Berence with a score of 50.
