April 10, 2008
Calgary, AB --- The Calgary Stampede today announced a new three-year broadcast agreement with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
Beginning in July 2008, the agreement will provide over 90 total hours of daily coverage during the 10-day Stampede. CBC television, CBCSports.ca and bold (formerly CBC Country Canada), will broadcast the Rodeo, the GMC Rangeland Derby and the Calgary Stampede Parade.
“The annual 10-day Stampede each July draws visitors from all over the world for an authentic western experience. The partnership with CBC allows us to deliver the excitement of the Calgary Stampede to even more Canadians coast-to-coast-to coast,” said Gord Fache, vice-president, Corporate Development and Stampede Programming, Calgary Stampede.
The first Stampede rodeo was presented by Guy Weadick in 1912. Today, the Calgary Stampede is one of Canada’s most famous tourist attractions, drawing 1.2 million visitors each year. At the 2008 Stampede, 120 cowboys and cowgirls will compete for $1.83 million in rodeo prize money and drivers at the GMC Rangeland Derby will compete for over $1 million. The Calgary Stampede Parade is the world’s largest western-themed parade with over 350,000 spectators. This year’s Stampede will take place July 4 to 13 with the parade on Friday, July 4.
“The opportunity to welcome back one of Canada’s greatest cultural and sporting events to our network is tremendous news for viewers,” said Scott Moore, executive director, CBC Sports. “The Calgary Stampede is a wonderful Canadian tradition that has special meaning for millions across the country. The parade, rodeo and the chuckwagon races attract Calgarians and visitors alike – this agreement allows us to share the spirit of Stampede Park with all Canadians.”
