Canada Looks to Defend Two-Time Title in Wellington Nations' Cup

March 6, 2008

Ottawa, ON - Mac Cone of King City, ON, Karen Cudmore of Victoria, BC, Mario Deslauriers of Bromont, QC, and Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, are the four team members that will comprise the Canadian Show Jumping Team in the $75,000 FEI Nations' Cup, Presented by CN, on Friday evening, March 7, during the CN OPEN CSIO 5* in Wellington, FL.

Cone will be aboard Ole, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Sara Houston and Larry Evoy. With Ole, Cone won the $60,000 Kilkenny Cup Grand Prix at CSI3* WEF V in Wellington, FL.

Southern Pride, a 10-year-old Holsteiner stallion owned by Blair Cudmore, will be Cudmore's mount for the Nations' Cup. The duo finished in seventh in the $60,000 Kilkenny Cup Grand Prix at CSI3* WEF V.

Deslauriers will ride his own horse, Paradigm, a 14-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding. Recently, the pair finished ninth in $100,000 World Cup Qualifier, CSI3* WEF VII.

Lamaze will ride Torrey Pines and Ashland Stable's Hickstead, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion. Hickstead and Lamaze have recently won the $75,000 Palm Beach Equine Clinic/Adequan Grand Prix at CSI3* WEF VI in Wellington, FL.

In addition to the team members, Erynn Ballard of Hillsburgh, ON, and Darrin Dlin, a native of Spruce Grove, AB, will compete as individuals in the International Division.

For the past two years, Canada has won the Wellington Nations' Cup, the only international team show jumping competition held in the United States. In 2006, Canada won a thrilling jump-off against the United States for the victory and, in 2007, the Canadian team was able to maintain an early lead to secure the win. The Canadian Show Jump Team was also victorious in 2004, also securing their win with a jump-off victory against the United States.

"The Canadian riders have been doing very well down here in Wellington," remarked Terrance Millar, chef d'équipe of the Canadian Show Jumping Team and Chair of the Jump Canada High Performance Committee. "I think that we will field a very good team in the Nations' Cup."

The two-round $75,000 FEI Nations' Cup, Presented by CN, will take place at night under the lights with FEI 'I' course designer Jose Gamarra of Bolivia setting the track. This year's competition will see a record nine teams competing - Argentina, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Venezuela and the United States will challenge Canada for the title. Individuals from Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Iran and Russia will also compete.

A Nations' Cup is the only competition in show jumping where riders, competing in teams of four, compete against other countries for top honours. The top three scores from each team are counted towards the final result of the two round competition.
