Wellington, FL --- Katherine Newman of Wellington, FL, rode to the top once again this past week at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival. Coming off a win from the previous week in the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) Equitation class, 16-year-old Newman added two more equitation wins to her expanding list of accomplishments. Newman trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry, and resides at their family farm Allwyn Court.
Newman earned first place in the WIHS Equitation again, this time aboard a horse named Apollo. She piloted Apollo for SBS Farms and Susie Schoellkopf. The pair performed beautifully in the WIHS Hunter Phase, coming home with an impressive score of 92. After laying down a successful Jumper Phase trip as well, Newman came away with first place overall. Her winning streak continued when she received the blue ribbon for her stellar ride in the ASPCA Maclay, and her blues were added to her numerous ribbons on Allwyn Court’s tack room wall.
“Katherine rode so well this week,” commented her mother, Kathy. “She hasn’t ridden Apollo since she showed him in the equitation last fall. I guess she didn’t forget how to ride him. It was nice for her to win the Washington again and to win the Maclay. I’m really proud of her.”
Newman also competed in the Junior Hunter divisions. In the Large Junior 16-17 Hunters, she guided Zenith to a blue ribbon finish over fences. Zenith is owned by Jay Matter and Dee Thomas of Wellington, FL. Zenith also finished third under saddle. In the older Small Junior Hunter division, Newman showed Chelsea for trainer Sissy Wickes. Chelsea is owned by Felecia Weiss.
In the jumper ring, she showed Forever Blue and Chellapo Z in the Junior Jumpers for owner Mimi Abel-Smith, and Chellapo Z pinned seventh in the Medium Junior Jumper Classic. Additionally, the junior rider successfully competed with Pacific Beach for trainer Candice King in the 1.30m jumpers.
Katherine Newman will continue to show at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival with the horses from Allwyn Court and additional catch-rides.
