Katherine Newman Adds WIHS Equitation Victory to 2008
Winter Equestrian Festival Win List
February 12, 2008
Wellington, FL --- Katherine Newman of Allwyn Court had another successful week at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival and came away with first place honors in the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) Equitation class. Newman trains with her parents, Kathy and Gerry, and resides at their farm in Wellington, FL.
In the equitation, Newman piloted Fahari for Erynn Ballard. After taking home seventh place in the USEF Show Jumping Talent Search on Friday with Fahari, the young rider earned an impressive score of 92 in the hunter phase of the WIHS, winning first place in the class. In the WIHS jumper phase, she earned another high score of 90, finishing third. Her consistent rides and top scores in the WIHS added up for a first place finish overall and the blue ribbon.
“Last week went really well,” stated Newman. “Fahari was excellent.” Just two weeks ago, Newman won the USEF Hunt Seat Medal aboard Aspirant, a horse she rode for Lauren Hough.
She also competed in the jumper ring last week aboard Forever Blue and Chellapo Z. Both horses are owned by Mimi Abel-Smith. “I showed Forever Blue and Chellapo Z in the Low Juniors,” said Newman. “We had some unlucky rails, but they were both very good. Chellapo was double clear and eighth in the Low Juniors on Friday. He also went clear in the classic, but had a rail in the jump-off and was ninth.”
In the Small Junior 16-17 Hunters, Newman guided Daydream to win consistent ribbons. Daydream is also owned by Abel-Smith, and this was his first show of the year. With Newman in the irons, he received a third place, two fourths, a fifth, and a sixth. “It’s a great start for Daydream in his first week of competition,” Newman noted.
Newman will continue to show at the 2008 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington with the horses at Allwyn Court and additional catch-rides. She will show in the junior jumpers with Forever Blue, Chellapo Z, and Costa Sur, her winning mount from the CN North American Junior and Young Riders’ Championships in Lexington, VA. Additionally, she will show in the junior hunters and the equitation.
