Dominique Shone Finishes Second in FEI International Jumping Children's Farewell

January 2, 2008

Ottawa, ON --- Dominique Shone, 14, of Langley, BC, finished second in the Farewell Competition at the 2007 FEI International Jumping Children's Competition Final held December 3–8, 2007, in Jalapa, MEX.

Riding a borrowed horse, Belico, for the entire competition, Shone competed in the Warm-up Competition and the First Qualifying Round and had four faults in each class. Shone’s total points after the First Qualifier were 16.

In Second Qualifying Competition, Shone had two rails, and earned another 12 points for a total of 28. Following the two qualifying competitions, 18 riders advanced to the Final while the others competed in the Farewell competition. Shone missed participating in the Final by one point.

The Farewell Competition was Shone’s time to shine. She was less than one second off the winning time of 58.50 seconds with her fault free time of 59.46. Gabriel Nasser of Mexico aboard Navila won the Farewell Competition.

Mexican riders swept the 2007 FEI Children's Final by taking the top three spots. Seven riders advanced to the jump-off with Jose Antonio Chedraui and Bengala posting the winning time of 29.32 seconds. Second place, in a time of 31.47, went to Jose Angel Arrevalo riding Cash while Erick Jimenez finished in third place with Preciosa in a time of 32.09.

“Attending the Final was the most amazing experience I have ever had,” noted Shone who trains with Brent and Laura Balisky. “All through the city of Jalapa there were huge signs that the FEI Children's Final was been held there. It was made clear to us that we were already winners by just qualifying for the Final.”

Extending the hospitality that the FEI Children's Final has become known for, Belico's owner has invited Shone back to Jalapa to ride him again in competition.

“The footing was absolutely amazing and the quality of competition was brilliant. It was a very relaxed competition,” reflected Shone. “It is actually very sad for me that this is my last year to qualify for the FEI Children's Final. I have been very lucky to able to attend this event for the second time.”

Shone earned the right to represent Canada through her placing at the FEI Children’s Final Qualifier held at Anderson Ranch in Calgary, AB, one of two qualifying competitions held in Canada in 2007.

The FEI International Jumping Children's Final is for show jumping competitors aged 12 to 14. Each country is represented by a maximum of two riders with the exception of the host country, who is entitled to have a number of competitors equal to the number of foreign entries. Foreign riders compete on borrowed horses, supplied by the host country. The competition was created to promote and encourage talented young riders by giving them the opportunity to experience international competition with support from the FEI.
