The Calgary Stampede Celebrates Quebec 400
January 9, 2008
Calgary, AB --- An enthusiastic contingent of nearly 100 cowboys and cowgirls from the Calgary Stampede will travel to Mr. Christie’s Québec Winter Carnival in Québec City in February to help celebrate the 400th birthday of Canada’s oldest municipality, Québec City.
It’s the 42nd consecutive year a group of Calgary volunteers will make the trek to Carnival, the world’s most popular winter carnival. This year, in celebration of Quebec City’s birthday bash, the Stampede’s plans are bigger than ever – with more public events, more entertainment and more fun.
“What unites these two great festivals is what unites our country – the pride we have in the special character and culture of our diverse communities,” says George Brookman, Calgary Stampede president and chairman of the board. “Just as the annual Stampede is a celebration of the unique western character of Calgary, Carnival celebrates Québec City’s special cultural identity.”
One of the most exciting events will be a special free Stampede barbecue at CFB Valcartier on Feb. 8. “We want to honor and thank the families of the men and women in Canada's military for their contribution to our freedom and their dedication to Canada,” says Brookman.
The next day, Feb. 9, Calgary will host one of its famous Flapjack breakfasts in the heart of Old Quebec City for the citizens and the visitors to Carnival. That evening the Calgary Stampede will also host a huge free Stampede barbeque and dance.
“We want to throw a birthday bash to remember at Carnival,” says Brookman. “We will also be celebrating Québec City’s birthday in July at the 2008 Calgary Stampede with a variety of special features.”
“We have participated in each others’ events for nearly half a century,” says Brookman. “Whether a fun-filled winter carnival, a western summer festival – or any one of the hundreds of cultural celebrations held coast-to-coast-to-coast every year – our diversity is what makes Canada unique in the world and strong as a nation.”
